Steps To Obtaining a License as A Minor

  • Sign up for lessons by texting, calling, or emailing me.
  • Be at least 15 1/2 years old.
  • Go to aplusdrivinglessons.com/education. Complete the Free On-Line Driving course.
  • After you have completed the course, we will send you a pink certificate.
  • Schedule an appointment at the DMV to take the learner’s permit test.
  • You will need the pink certificate of completion in driver’s education, form DL-44 Apply Online for a Driver License or ID Card – California DMV, the DMV fee, birth certificate, social security card, proof of parental name change, and two proofs of residence.
  • Complete 6 hours of behind-the wheel training with a professional and 50 hours of behind the wheel training with a licensed driver at least 25 years old. After the six hours of behind-the wheel training with me, I will issue you a gold certificate.
  • After six months have passed since the issuance of the learner’s permit, you can schedule the behind-the-wheel test. Example: If you get your learner’s permit on January 1st, you can schedule your test on July 1st.

Additional Restrictions on Minor Drivers

  • Minors may NOT drive with parents until the permit is signed by the driving school instructor at first appointment.
  • Permits are valid for 1 year from the application date. SE: permit expiration date.
  • For the first year of their license, teenage drivers cannot:
  • Drive between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. (i.e., no late-night drives)
  • Transport any passengers under 20 years old unless accompanied by an adult 25 years or older, a licensed driving instructor, or a parent/guardian who is a licensed California driver.
  • There are a few exceptions to these provisional license restrictions, such as needing to drive because of:
  • Medical necessity
  • School-related activities
  • Employment
  • Needs for an immediate family member
  • You’ll need a note signed by your doctor, school principal, supervisor, or parent/guardian in all cases. The signed note explaining the necessity of driving outside of the legal curfew must include the following:
  • An explanation of why driving is necessary (i.e., no other reasonable transport is available)
  • A predicted end date (e.g., recovery date, end of the school play or football season)
  • You must always keep the signed note with you when driving outside of your license restrictions. If you get pulled over at midnight for driving as a minor, you’ll want to have that note ready to show law enforcement (along with your license, registration, and proof of insurance).
  • There’s one final exception to the above restrictions placed on minors with a provisional license. If you are an emancipated minor (and declared so when applying for your license), you don’t need a note to drive for work or other valid purposes. You do, however, need court documents showing that you’ve been legally emancipated—and you’re not exempt from any of the driver training requirements for a valid California driver’s license.
  • How To Prepare For The Lesson
  • The student needs to have the physical learner’s permit with them and should wear closed shoes. Please do not wear flip-flops or sandals.
  • Lessons are typically 2 hours in length.
  • I can accommodate students by picking them up and/ or dropping them off from school and/ or another address assuming it is within the school’s service area.

What To Expect On During A Behind The Wheel Driving Lesson

Every driving lesson is different because every student is unique. Generally, I pick up a student and start off with the basics. My vehicle is equipped with a second brake and rear mirror. If the student has limited experience driving or lives in a high congested neighborhood, I may drive them to a quiet area.

As the student progresses, he or she will be taught more challenging aspects and scenarios of driving. The idea is to get them out of their comfort zone so that are familiar with the various situations they might encounter.
